Weight Loss Diary (1) - Determination

As a working mom of 2 young children with a professional job, I want to look good (good image), be healthy, be more confident, and be more energetic. After hearing more and more weight loss successful stories, I am here determined to lose all my extra weight since I gave birth to my first child. I have to admit this is not the first attempt, but this is the most serious and determined resolution :)

Unlike the past attempts, this time, I did more research, I think I have a more in-depth understanding how to achieve my goal, and have an achievable plan (based on my studies on those successful stories – I am not the first or only mom gain weight after giving birth :) ). In brief -- Persistence is the most important factor, combining exercise and diet is the key. I am a lot more “calories conscious” this time after reading a lot of articles about weight loss and calories. Here is my results from the Calorie Calculator:

Your results for the Women's Nutrition Guide Calorie Calculator

These results will help you to know how many calories you need to maintain
your current weight, and the number of calories needed per day to achieve your
goal weight in a healthy, steady manner.

You need 1977.1 calories per day to maintain your current weight without exercise.
If you reduce your current caloric intake to 1477.1 calories per day you will lose one pound per week without exercise.

Exercise and Calorie Needs
If you exercise for 30 minutes each day, you will be able to reach your goal weight with 2033.3 calories per day.

Macronutrients
The United States Department of Agriculture suggests that approximately 50 percent of your calories come from carbohydrates, about 30 percent from fats, and approximately 20 percent from protein sources. One gram of protein has about four calories, one gram of fat has about nine calories, and one gram of carbohydrate has about four calories.

You need 228.5 grams of carbohydrates, 60.3 grams of fat, and 91.4 grams of protein per day for 1828.2 calories to maintain your goal weight of 120 pounds.

Please remember that these calorie counts are an average, you may need to adjust your calorie needs up or down slightly to get the results you want. Your results are calculated to help you understand how many calories you need to maintain your current weight, or the number of calories you need to lose weight slowly, over several months' time.

“Persistence is the most important factor, combining exercise and diet is the key” – This is also exactly where the challenges lying :)

“I am busy and can’t consistently find time everyday to work out” was my excuse in all past attempts, so this time, I won’t let this ever becomes an excuse. Instead of getting up at 7:30AM, now I set my alarm clock to 7AM to ensure at least 30 minutes morning exercise routine.

“I am generally a happy working mom, so I have very good appetite and I like to cook” was another challenge to get on diet. Now I am more conscious about calorie intake. I will continue to cook for the family though :)

I am just determined this time, I will maintain a weight loss diary in my blog (under public’s eyes :) ) until my goal is achieved.

Wish me good luck and support me, will you? :)

  4. If you have time, start running at least 30 min every day. I started my running last July, and lost almost 35 pounds in less than a year without much changing diet.

  6. Hi Shawna,

I am 5'5. I am now trying to combine exercise and diet to burn and cut calories intake. Using some online calories calculator, I need burn 500 calories a day to reach my goal (120lb). I am gonig to jog in the morning (roughly 1mile would burn 100 calories, so I need to run 2.5 miles a day). Then pay attention to my diet and watch the food label more now to avoid high calories or fat food.

  7. Good luck on your weight loss journey. I have been on one last couple of years and have managed to be just 8 lbs shy of being not overweight. I have kind of slowed down and am looking for motivation to get back on track..
